about

Chet Baker blew one of the finest solos of his career during his reading of ‘My Funny Valentine’ from the first set of his performance on April 28th, 1988 at the Funkhaus in Hannover, West Germany. Two weeks later, he fell to his death from a hotel room in Amsterdam. It seems somehow churlish to add that cocaine and heroin were involved but there you have it…

In 2015, I assembled this piece by setting each phrase of his opening solo to loop alongside itself in pairs: one unaltered and the other at 87.5% of the original tempo. Beneath these, I mixed a third copy of the corresponding phrase stretched to the total length of time that it took for the pair of loops to drift apart and come back together. This system of arranging produces what I have described elsewhere as an exploded mix owing to similarities that it shares with exploded diagrams in technical drawing. I then created the opening and closing sections by time stretching the string elements from the original performance.

about

Radio Landscape

I live in Milwaukee, WI with my wife and our four children. The creation of music has long been an avocational pursuit of mine. The body of work that I offer under the moniker of Radio Landscape has obvious antecedents in American minimalism specifically and electronic music in general.
